In environmental engineering and process industries, the term encompasses technologies that target suspended particles in fluids and gases, with the goal of protecting health, meeting regulatory standards, or ensuring product quality.

In air handling, particleremoval employs filtration (high-efficiency particulate air filters, mechanical filters), electrostatic precipitators, cyclones, and scrubbers to capture particles ranging from submicron to tens of micrometers.
