The process involves identifying the factors of the denominator of the original rational function. If the denominator can be factored into distinct linear factors, the partial fraction decomposition will consist of terms with those linear factors in the denominator. If there are repeated linear factors, the decomposition will include terms with those factors raised to increasing powers. Quadratic factors in the denominator, which cannot be factored further over real numbers, are handled by including terms with linear numerators over the quadratic factor.
