Parnost

Parnost is a term found in several Slavic languages that denotes the concept of parity—the property of something being even or odd, or more generally a symmetry under a parity transformation. In English-language scholarship the standard term is parity, and parnost usually appears in translations or regional texts.

In mathematics, parnost may refer to the parity of integers (even or odd) or to the parity of a permutation (even or odd depending on the number of transpositions). In abstract algebra and number theory, parity functions describe whether a value lies in the set of even or odd elements, and parity checks are used to classify certain mathematical objects.

In physics, parity refers to the behavior of a system under spatial inversion (x to -x). The term parnost may be found in non-English texts to describe a system’s parity, including its eigenvalues under the parity operator, typically denoted as +1 (even) or -1 (odd).

In computing and information theory, parity bits provide a simple form of error detection; phrases like even parity or odd parity convey the same idea, and some multilingual sources may render this as parnost.

Usage and clarity: because parnost is not standardized in English technical writing, it is best explained on first use and, when possible, linked to the English term parity. References should specify whether the discussion concerns numerical parity, permutation parity, or parity under a symmetry operation. Parnost thus functions primarily as a cross-language synonym, rather than a distinct English technical term.
