Pariteetin

Pariteetin (Finnish for parity) is a concept used across mathematics, physics, chemistry and information theory to describe symmetry or balance under certain transformations. In Finnish, pariteetti denotes the general idea, while pariteetin is the genitive form meaning “of parity.”

In mathematics, parity classifies integers as even or odd: an integer n is even if n = 2k and odd if n = 2k+1. The parity of a function describes symmetry about the origin: even functions satisfy f(-x) = f(x), odd functions satisfy f(-x) = -f(x). In combinatorics, parity distinguishes even and odd permutations, i.e., whether a permutation can be decomposed into an even or odd number of transpositions.

In physics, parity is implemented by the parity operator P, which inverts spatial coordinates: Pψ(r) = ψ(-r). Many classical laws are invariant under this inversion, a property known as parity conservation. However, experiments show parity violation in weak interactions. Particles can have intrinsic parity, influencing selection rules in decays and reactions.

In chemistry and material science, parity considerations help describe the symmetry of molecular orbitals and govern transitions observed in spectroscopy. In information theory and computer science, parity is used for error detection, most commonly through parity bits that indicate whether the number of set bits in a data word is even or odd.
