Pararammelsbergite

Pararammelsbergite is a rare mineral belonging to the spinel group, with the chemical formula (Zn,Fe)Fe2O4. It is a zinc and iron oxide mineral, closely related to rammelsbergite, from which it differs primarily in its zinc content. Pararammelsbergite was first described in 1977 from the Rammelsberg mine in Goslar, Lower Saxony, Germany, where it occurs as an alteration product of rammelsbergite. The mineral is typically found in association with other zinc and iron oxide minerals, such as franklinite and willemite.

Pararammelsbergite crystals are usually octahedral, similar to those of rammelsbergite, but they are often altered and exhibit a dull luster. The mineral is usually dark brown to black in color, with a metallic to submetallic luster. Its hardness is approximately 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and it has a specific gravity of around 4.8 to 5.0.

The mineral's name is derived from its relationship to rammelsbergite, with "para-" indicating its similarity but distinct nature. Pararammelsbergite is of limited significance in mineralogy and geology, primarily due to its rarity and the fact that it is often altered or weathered. However, it provides valuable insights into the alteration processes of zinc and iron oxide minerals in certain geological environments.
