Etymology: In the imagined language of the coastal Valryn culture, para- denotes alongside or beside, and kriinselt is a compound of kriin- meaning memory and selt meaning stone. The combined term thus suggests a memory-associated stone kept beside the people.

Description: Artifacts called parakriinselt tablets are typically flat, disk- or tablet-shaped stones, ranging from small palm-sized pieces to larger slabs. Inscriptions are traced with a stylus or etched by chiseling, often using pigment in lay lines. Rituals specify who may inscribe, what memories may be recorded, and when the readings occur.
