Paperitehtaalla

Paperitehtaalla is a Finnish term that translates to "at the paper mill" or "in the paper mill." It refers to a location where paper is manufactured. Paper mills are industrial facilities that transform raw materials, primarily wood pulp, into various types of paper products.

The process within a paper mill typically involves several stages. Wood logs are debarked and then chipped. These chips are then cooked with chemicals to separate the cellulose fibers, forming a slurry known as pulp. This pulp is washed and screened to remove impurities. The cleaned pulp is then mixed with water and other additives like fillers and dyes.

This mixture is spread thinly onto a moving screen, where water drains away, and the fibers begin to interlock. This wet sheet then passes through a series of rollers that press out more water and compact the fibers. Finally, the paper is dried by passing it over heated cylinders. After drying, the paper may be further processed, such as being calendered to achieve a smooth surface or coated for specific applications.
