Pansenfunktion
Pansenfunktion, also known as rumination, is a digestive process unique to ruminant animals, including cattle, sheep, and goats. It occurs in the rumen, the first compartment of the ruminant stomach. The process begins when the animal ingests food, which is then regurgitated and re-chewed, a process known as cud chewing. This regurgitation and re-chewing action allows for the breakdown of plant material that would otherwise be indigestible to monogastric animals, such as humans. The rumen contains a diverse microbial population that aids in the fermentation of plant material, producing volatile fatty acids, which are absorbed by the animal and used for energy. This process is crucial for the animal's nutrition, as it allows them to extract nutrients from fibrous plant material that would otherwise go to waste. The Pansenfunktion is a key adaptation that enables ruminants to thrive on a diet primarily consisting of grasses and other plant materials.
