Panimoteollisuus, or the brewing industry, refers to the commercial production of beer. It encompasses all aspects of beer manufacturing, from the sourcing of raw materials like malted barley, hops, water, and yeast, to the brewing process itself, fermentation, packaging, and distribution. Historically, brewing was often a localized craft, with small breweries serving their immediate communities. However, the industry has evolved significantly, with large multinational corporations now dominating a substantial portion of the global market, alongside a resurgence of smaller craft breweries.

The brewing process involves several key stages. Malting is the initial treatment of barley to promote germination, which develops the enzymes necessary for converting starches into fermentable sugars. These sugars are then extracted in a process called mashing, where the malt is mixed with hot water. The resulting liquid, known as wort, is then boiled with hops, which contribute bitterness, flavor, and aroma, as well as acting as a preservative. After cooling, yeast is added for fermentation, where it consumes the sugars and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide. Finally, the beer is conditioned, filtered, and packaged into bottles, cans, or kegs.
