Pangandaran

Pangandaran is a town and district (kecamatan) in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, Indonesia. It lies on the southern coast of the island of Java along the Indian Ocean and serves as the administrative center of the regency. Pangandaran Regency was created in 2012 by a division of Ciamis Regency.

Geography and environment: The district encompasses a coastal belt and interior hills, including parts of the Pangandaran National Park. The coast features beaches such as Pantai Pangandaran and Batu Karas, while the interior includes rainforest and limestone formations. The national park protects coastal and marine habitats and hosts a variety of wildlife, including birds, primates, and marine species.

Economy and tourism: Tourism is a major economic activity for Pangandaran. Visitors are drawn to beach scenery, water sports, snorkeling and diving along coral reefs, and riverine attractions such as the Green Canyon, formed by the Cijulang River and known for its green water and canyon-like passages.

Demographics and culture: The population is predominantly Sundanese, speaking Sundanese and Indonesian. Local culture features traditional arts, crafts, and cuisine.

Transport: The town is connected by road to other parts of West Java; access is primarily by car or bus, with air and rail access through larger nearby cities. Conservation and development policies aim to balance tourism with environmental protection.
