Paneeliaineistot, also known as panel data or longitudinal data, are a type of dataset used in statistical analysis and econometrics. They combine observations from multiple cross-sections over several time periods. This means that the same individuals, firms, or countries are observed at different points in time. For example, a panel dataset might track the income and employment status of a group of households over a decade, with annual surveys.

The key advantage of panel data is its ability to control for unobserved heterogeneity. By observing the same entities over time, researchers can distinguish between changes that occur within an entity (e.g., a firm improving its productivity) and changes that occur across entities (e.g., a new industry emerging). This allows for more robust causal inference compared to using only cross-sectional or time-series data.

Common methods for analyzing panel data include fixed effects and random effects models. Fixed effects models treat unobserved, time-invariant characteristics of the entities as fixed parameters, effectively removing their influence. Random effects models assume these unobserved characteristics are random variables, allowing for more efficient estimation under certain conditions. Panel data is widely used in fields such as economics, sociology, political science, and marketing to study dynamic processes, policy impacts, and individual behavior.
