Panamanian

Panamanian is the demonym for people from Panama and an adjective used to describe things related to the country of Panama, in Central America. The term covers nationality, culture, and various aspects of Panama’s society.

Panama's population is diverse, with mestizo, Afro-Panamanian, and Indigenous communities such as the Ngäbe-Buglé, Kuna, Emberá, and Wounaan. The official language is Spanish; English is widely used in business and government, particularly in international trade and the canal region. Indigenous languages are spoken within their communities.

Panama declared independence from Colombia in 1903. The Panama Canal, opened in 1914 and largely operated by the United States until 1999, remains central to the national economy and international commerce. The Balboa, pegged to the U.S. dollar, is the official currency, with the U.S. dollar circulating widely. Panamanian culture encompasses music and dance such as tamborito and punta, as well as diverse cuisines and traditions across its regions. The capital is Panama City, a major port and financial center.
