PanamaBalboaUSDollar refers to the use of the United States Dollar as the official currency of Panama, alongside its own historical currency, the Panamanian Balboa. In 2000, Panama officially adopted the US Dollar as its legal tender, effectively demonetizing the Balboa. However, the Balboa remains in circulation in the form of coins, which are pegged at par with the US Dollar. These Balboa coins are used in conjunction with US Dollar coins for smaller transactions.

The decision to adopt the US Dollar was driven by several factors. It was believed to promote economic stability, attract foreign investment, and simplify trade and financial transactions. By having a stable and widely accepted currency, Panama aimed to reduce currency exchange risks and facilitate its integration into the global economy. The country does not mint its own paper currency, relying entirely on US Dollar banknotes.

While the US Dollar is the de facto currency, the Panamanian Balboa still exists. Balboa coins, denominated as B/.1, B/.05, B/.01, and so on, are minted and circulated. These coins are always worth the equivalent amount in US cents. For example, a 1 Balboa coin is interchangeable with a 1 US Dollar coin, and a 5 centesimos Balboa coin is equivalent to a 5 cent US coin. This dual currency system means that Panama operates as a dollarized economy.
