Palvelunestohyökkäys, often abbreviated as DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) in English, is a malicious cyberattack aimed at overwhelming a target system, server, or network with a flood of internet traffic. The goal is to disrupt the normal functioning of the targeted resource, making it inaccessible to its legitimate users. Unlike a simple denial of service (DoS) attack, which originates from a single source, a DDoS attack leverages multiple compromised computer systems, often forming a botnet, to launch the attack from numerous locations simultaneously. This distributed nature makes it significantly harder to trace the origin of the attack and to mitigate its effects.

DDoS attacks can manifest in various forms, including volumetric attacks that consume all available bandwidth, protocol attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in network protocols, and application layer attacks that target specific applications or services. The impact of a successful DDoS attack can range from temporary service disruption and financial losses due to downtime to reputational damage and even the facilitation of other malicious activities.
