Palohälyttimet, known in English as smoke detectors or fire alarms, are devices designed to detect the presence of smoke, heat, or carbon monoxide, which are all indicators of a potential fire. Their primary function is to provide an early warning to occupants, allowing them to evacuate safely before a fire spreads and becomes life-threatening.

There are several types of smoke detection technology. Ionization alarms are best at detecting fast-flaming fires with smaller smoke particles. Photoelectric alarms, on the other hand, are more effective at sensing slow-burning fires that produce larger smoke particles. Combination alarms incorporate both ionization and photoelectric sensors for broader detection capabilities. Heat detectors respond to rapid temperature increases or a specific high temperature, and are often used in areas where smoke detectors might trigger false alarms, such as kitchens or garages. Carbon monoxide detectors are specialized devices that detect the colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion.

Proper installation and maintenance are crucial for the effective operation of palohälyttimet. They should be installed on every level of a home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Regular testing, typically monthly, and battery replacement, usually annually, are recommended to ensure they are functioning correctly. Many modern palohälyttimet are interconnected, meaning if one alarm is triggered, all connected alarms will sound, further enhancing safety. Legislation in many countries mandates the presence of working smoke alarms in residential buildings.
