Palmcyclase

Palmcyclase is a name that appears in some discussions as a hypothetical enzyme involved in cyclization reactions of palmitoyl-containing substrates. As of this writing, there is no widely recognized enzyme by this exact name in major biochemical databases such as UniProt, KEGG, or BRENDA, and no canonical reaction is attributed to it. The term is often used to describe a notional cyclase that would act on palmitoyl substrates, following the general -cyclase naming convention used for ring-forming enzymes.

If palmcyclase existed, its proposed function would be to catalyze cyclization reactions involving palmitoyl or palmitoyl-containing substrates. Possible outcomes could include intramolecular cyclization of long-chain fatty acyls to generate cyclic alkyl structures or the formation of cyclic lipids within membranes. The exact mechanism and enzyme class are unknown; it could resemble metal-dependent cyclases, radical-based enzymes such as radical SAM enzymes, or P450-like monooxygenases that initiate cyclization through oxidative activation. Substrate scope would likely be lipid-soluble molecules, and the enzyme would be expected to associate with cellular membranes.

However, there are currently no peer-reviewed reports establishing a gene, protein sequence, structure, or catalytic mechanism for a palmcyclase.
