Paljassaare

Paljassaare is a peninsula and a subdistrict of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Located in the northern part of the city, it is part of the Põhja-Tallinn district. The peninsula juts out into the Tallinn Bay and is characterized by its natural landscape.

Historically, Paljassaare was largely undeveloped and marshy. In the early 20th century, significant dredging and land reclamation efforts transformed parts of the area, primarily for industrial purposes and to create harbor facilities. The Paljassaare Harbor, a key part of Tallinn's maritime infrastructure, is situated here, handling cargo and passenger traffic.

Despite its industrial and harbor functions, Paljassaare also retains significant natural value. A substantial portion of the peninsula is designated as the Paljassaare Nature Reserve, established in 2005. This reserve encompasses wetlands, forests, and coastal meadows, serving as an important habitat for numerous bird species, particularly during migration periods. It is recognized as an Important Bird Area.

The subdistrict of Paljassaare is sparsely populated, with most of its area dedicated to industrial, port, and nature reserve functions. Access to the peninsula is primarily via road, serving the port and the limited residential or recreational areas. It remains a place where industrial activity coexists with protected natural environments.
