Paleoslavistics

Paleoslavistics is a subfield of Slavic linguistics that focuses on the study of Old Church Slavonic and the earliest documented stages of Slavic languages. It is concerned with reconstructing the history of the Slavic languages, their phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon, prior to the emergence of distinct national languages. Paleoslavists analyze ancient texts, inscriptions, and other linguistic evidence to understand the evolution of Slavic speech.

The primary object of study in paleoslavistics is Old Church Slavonic, the first literary Slavic language, which was developed in the 9th century by Saints Cyril and Methodius. This language served as a liturgical and literary medium for various Slavic peoples, and its study provides a crucial window into the common ancestor of modern Slavic languages. Paleoslavists also examine other early Slavic records, such as Old East Slavic, Old Polish, and Old Czech, to trace regional linguistic developments.
