Palaavien

Palaavien is a constructed language developed for worldbuilding and fictional media. In its setting, it is spoken by the Palaavian people of a southern archipelago called Valara, where it functions as a community language in both urban and rural contexts. It is portrayed as endangered within the fiction, with revitalization efforts depicted in contemporary narratives.

The name Palaavien blends a root pala- meaning “ancestral” in the language’s own lexicon with the suffix -vien, a common ethnonym marker in its phonology.

Palaavien has five vowels, a, e, i, o, u, and a modest consonant inventory (p, t, k, m, n, s, l, r, h). Syllables are typically CV or CVC, with stress on the penultimate syllable. The writing system is an indigenous alphabet used in literature, ceremonial texts, and local signage.

Palaavien is analytic with an SVO word order; modifiers typically follow their nouns. It uses affixes to indicate tense, aspect, and evidentiality, and features a moderate degree of agglutination in verb forms. Noun phrases include demonstratives and numerals; the base-10 numeral system is standard.
