Paketfach

Paketfach is a parcel compartment used in parcel delivery networks, primarily in German-speaking countries. It denotes a fixed-sized locker or box within a parcel station, post office, or partner location where recipients can pick up packages delivered there. The term differentiates the single compartment from the broader facility (Paketstation) and from a standard mailbox (Postfach).

Operation: When a carrier delivers a parcel to a Paketfach, the package is placed in an available compartment and the recipient is notified with a pickup code, PIN, or barcode. The recipient visits the location, enters the code or scans the barcode, and opens the corresponding compartment to retrieve the parcel. Access periods vary by provider but often range from several days up to a couple of weeks; after the retention window, uncollected parcels may be returned to sender.

Benefits and limitations: Paketfächer provide convenient, often 24/7 access and can reduce failed deliveries and doorstep theft. They require nearby lockers and a working pickup code; very large items may not fit, and availability depends on the network’s coverage and hours.

Regional context: The concept is widespread in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland as part of the parcel locker ecosystem. In many networks the term Packstation refers to the broader service, with Paketfach denoting the individual compartments. Similar systems exist worldwide under various names, such as parcel lockers or pickup lockers.
