Painopituussuhde, a Finnish term, translates to "aspect ratio" in English. It describes the proportional relationship between an object's width and its height. This concept is widely used in various fields, particularly in visual media such as photography, film, and computer displays. The aspect ratio is typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, for example, 16:9 or 4:3. The first number represents the width, and the second represents the height.

In photography, different camera formats have historically used different aspect ratios. For instance, 35mm film commonly produced images with a 3:2 aspect ratio. Digital cameras often retain these traditional ratios or offer others like 4:3 or 16:9. In cinematography, various aspect ratios have been employed, with widescreen formats like 2.35:1 becoming prevalent for a more immersive cinematic experience compared to the older 4:3 standard used in early television.

Computer monitors and television screens also adhere to specific aspect ratios. The 16:9 aspect ratio is now the dominant standard for high-definition television (HDTV) and most modern computer displays, offering a wider field of view suitable for widescreen content. Older television sets and some computer monitors used the 4:3 aspect ratio. The choice of aspect ratio influences how images and video are displayed, affecting composition and the overall viewing experience. When content is displayed in an aspect ratio different from the display's native ratio, it may result in letterboxing (black bars at the top and bottom) or pillarboxing (black bars on the sides) to maintain the original proportions.
