Paineistuskeitin

Paineistuskeitin, also known as a pressure cooker in English, is a sealed pot with a lid that locks in place. It cooks food using steam pressure. Inside the pot, a liquid is heated, creating steam. As the steam cannot escape, the pressure inside the pot increases significantly above atmospheric pressure. This elevated pressure raises the boiling point of water, allowing food to cook at a higher temperature.

The primary advantage of a pressure cooker is its speed. Because the cooking temperature is higher, food can be prepared much faster than with conventional cooking methods, often reducing cooking times by up to 70%. This makes it useful for cooking tough cuts of meat, dried beans, and other foods that typically require long simmering times. The sealed environment also helps to retain more nutrients and flavor in the food.

Safety features are crucial for pressure cookers. Modern designs typically include multiple safety valves to prevent over-pressurization. The lid can usually only be opened when the pressure inside has returned to a safe level. Early models had simpler designs and a higher risk of accidents, but contemporary pressure cookers are generally very safe when used according to the manufacturer's instructions. They are available in various materials, with stainless steel and aluminum being common choices.
