Painehäviöillä refers to the loss of pressure that occurs as a fluid flows through a system. This pressure loss is an inevitable consequence of friction between the fluid and the walls of the conduit, as well as internal friction within the fluid itself. These frictional forces dissipate energy from the fluid, resulting in a reduction of its pressure.

Several factors contribute to the magnitude of pressure loss. The viscosity of the fluid plays a significant role; more viscous fluids experience greater frictional resistance and thus higher pressure losses. The velocity of the fluid is also a key factor, as higher velocities generally lead to increased turbulence and friction. The length and diameter of the conduit are also important, with longer and narrower pipes causing more significant pressure drops. Furthermore, the roughness of the internal surfaces of the conduit can increase friction and contribute to pressure loss. Obstructions, bends, valves, and other fittings within the flow path also introduce localized pressure losses due to changes in flow direction and turbulence.

Understanding and quantifying pressure loss is crucial in the design and operation of fluid systems, such as pipelines, HVAC systems, and hydraulic circuits. Excessive pressure loss can reduce the efficiency of a system, require more powerful pumps, and potentially lead to inadequate flow rates at the destination. Engineers use principles of fluid mechanics and empirical formulas to calculate and mitigate pressure losses to ensure systems operate effectively and economically.
