Pabiji

Pabiji, also known as Pabuji or Pabuji Rathore, is a prominent folk deity of Rajasthan, India. He is revered as a warrior-god and a protector of cattle. Stories of Pabuji's life and deeds are passed down through oral traditions, primarily through the performance of ballad singers known as bhopas. These performances are often accompanied by the playing of a stringed instrument called a Ravanahatha.

The legends of Pabiji describe him as a Rajput prince who lived in the 14th century. He is renowned for his bravery, his commitment to justice, and his role in protecting the innocent and the weak. A central theme in his mythology is his epic battle against the serpent-goddess Surpa Devta, whom he defeated to save his people and their livestock. This victory cemented his status as a powerful protector.

Pabiji is particularly popular among the Charan and Raika communities in Rajasthan, who often regard him as their guardian. Devotees pray to him for protection from disease, accidents, and other misfortunes. His shrines are often simple open-air altars or small temples, and he is frequently depicted in colorful "Pabuji ki phad" paintings, which are large scroll paintings illustrating his life story. These phads serve as visual aids during the bhopa performances. His worship is characterized by strong local traditions and a deep connection to the pastoral life of Rajasthan.
