PRDP

The Philippine Rural Development Project, commonly known as PRDP, was a six-year government program implemented from 2014 to 2020. Its primary objective was to increase rural incomes and reduce poverty through improved agricultural and fisheries infrastructure and value chain development. The project was a collaborative effort between the Philippine government, through the Department of Agriculture, and the World Bank.

PRDP focused on supporting specific agricultural commodities that had strong market potential. It aimed to enhance the competitiveness of these sectors by improving access to markets, increasing productivity, and strengthening governance. The project was structured around several key components, including planning and strategy development, rural infrastructure project development, enterprise and market development, and cross-cutting concerns such as environmental safeguards and climate change adaptation.

A significant aspect of PRDP was its emphasis on community participation and local governance. It aimed to empower local government units and farmer and fisherfolk organizations to identify, plan, and implement their own development initiatives. The project supported the development of farm-to-market roads, post-harvest facilities, irrigation systems, and other vital infrastructure to improve the livelihoods of rural communities. It also provided support for value-adding activities and market access for agricultural products, aiming to create more profitable opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk.
