PKIsystem

A PKI system, or public key infrastructure system, is a framework that enables secure electronic communication by issuing, managing, and validating digital certificates that bind public keys to the identities of entities such as people, organizations, or devices. Its main goal is to establish trust in digital interactions, supporting authentication, data encryption, and data integrity.

Core components of a PKI include one or more trusted certificate authorities (CAs) that issue and sign certificates, registration authorities (RAs) that verify identity information, certificate databases and stores for managing certificates, and revocation mechanisms such as certificate revocation lists (CRLs) and online certificate status protocol (OCSP) responders. Hardware security modules (HSMs) are often used to protect private keys, and private keys may be stored on devices or in secure cloud repositories. The system typically relies on X.509 certificates and a defined chain of trust, where trusted root certificates anchor the validation of intermediate and end-entity certificates.

Operations in a PKI cover key generation, certificate issuance and renewal, and certificate revocation when a private key is compromised or a relationship ends. Typical use cases include TLS for securing websites, code signing to verify software integrity, S/MIME for email security, and client authentication in enterprise environments. PKI governance is guided by policies and practices, such as Certificate Policies (CP) and Certification Practice Statements (CPS), and standards from the PKI ecosystem, including X.509 and PKIX specifications.

PKI systems can be deployed as enterprise PKIs or as public PKIs, and may involve trust hierarchies or cross-certification. They provide a scalable approach to digital identity and secure communications, while requiring robust key management and ongoing security oversight.
