PJM

PJM Interconnection, LLC, commonly known as PJM, is a regional transmission organization (RTO) and independent system operator (ISO) in the United States. It coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity across a large portion of the eastern United States and administers wholesale electricity markets to help ensure reliable, affordable power.

PJM’s footprint includes parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia, serving roughly 65 million people. It operates the high-voltage transmission system in its region and conducts long-range transmission planning to address evolving generation and demand.

Markets and operations: PJM runs day-ahead and real-time energy markets, as well as a capacity market and ancillary services markets. It conducts security-constrained economic dispatch and manages transmission constraints, while coordinating with neighboring grids to maintain bulk power reliability.

History and governance: The organization traces its origins to the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection, from which the PJM name is derived. It was formed in 1997 as part of the development of competitive electricity markets. PJM is overseen by a board of directors and operates under the authority of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Its headquarters are in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

In its operations, PJM works with neighboring transmission operators and ISOs to coordinate regional reliability and to integrate new resources, such as renewable generation, into the bulk power system.
