In this framework, a signal template is subjected to a cycle of amplification steps in a responsive medium, with denaturation corresponding to signal separation, annealing to template-target binding, and extension to constructive growth of the acoustic pattern. The result is the progressive enhancement of specific frequencies or temporal patterns across successive cycles, analogous to DNA amplification in PCR.

Origin and terminology: The term blends PCR with ään, a suffix that evokes sound in several languages, signaling the intended cross-domain analogy. The concept has appeared mainly in theoretical discussions, thought experiments, and some science-fiction prose, rather than in experimental biology or mainstream acoustics.

Proposed workflows and challenges: A source signal is encoded into a material or medium that undergoes reversible changes—thermal, optical, or chemical—to create cycle-dependent modification of the signal. After each cycle, sensors or transducers read the output to assess amplification and fidelity.
