Pööripäevaga refers to the Estonian tradition of celebrating the first day of spring, which typically falls on March 21st or 22nd, marking the spring equinox. The term "pööripäev" translates to "turning day" or "equinox," and the holiday is deeply rooted in Estonian folklore and agricultural customs.

During pööripäevaga, Estonians traditionally gather to welcome the arrival of spring, often engaging in outdoor activities such as bonfires, games, and nature walks. One of the most well-known customs is the lighting of bonfires, symbolizing the renewal of life and the sun’s return. These fires are believed to have protective qualities, warding off evil spirits and ensuring a good harvest.

Another significant aspect of the holiday is the preparation of special foods, such as pööripäeva leib (spring equinox bread) or pööripäeva piim (spring equinox milk), which are shared among friends and family. Some regions also observe the tradition of jumping over bonfires or rolling down hills, believed to bring good luck and health.

Pööripäevaga is also associated with various folk beliefs, including the idea that the first flowers of spring, such as daffodils or crocuses, should be collected carefully to avoid misfortune.
