Põlveprotees, or knee prosthesis, refers to an artificial joint that replaces a damaged or diseased knee. This surgical procedure, known as knee replacement surgery or total knee arthroplasty, is typically performed to alleviate pain and restore function in individuals suffering from severe knee osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis. The prosthesis itself is usually made of a combination of high-grade plastics and metals, designed to mimic the natural movement and load-bearing capabilities of a healthy knee.

The surgery involves removing the damaged cartilage and bone from the femur, tibia, and sometimes the patella, and then implanting the prosthetic components. These components are secured using bone cement or a porous coating that allows the patient's bone to grow into the implant. The goal is to create a smooth, durable surface that allows the leg to move freely and without pain.
