Põhivundamendi

Põhivundamendi, which translates to "main foundation" in English, is a fundamental structural element in building construction. Its primary purpose is to transfer the loads from the building above to the ground or supporting soil layers. A well-designed and constructed põhivundamendi ensures the stability and longevity of the entire structure. It prevents excessive settlement, tilting, and potential collapse caused by uneven soil conditions or heavy loads.

The design of a põhivundamendi depends on various factors including the type of soil, the weight of the building, local climate conditions, and seismic activity. Common types of main foundations include strip foundations, pad foundations, and raft foundations. Strip foundations are typically used for load-bearing walls, extending in a continuous line beneath them. The construction process involves excavating the ground to the required depth, laying a damp-proof course, and then pouring concrete. Proper drainage around the foundation is also crucial to prevent water accumulation, which can lead to frost heave or erosion.
