Päikeseküttega refers to a solar thermal system used for heating purposes. These systems harness solar energy to produce heat, which can then be utilized for domestic hot water or space heating. The core components of a päikeseküttega system include solar collectors, a storage tank, and a distribution network.

Solar collectors are typically mounted on rooftops or open ground and are designed to absorb sunlight. There are several types of collectors, with flat-plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors being the most common. Flat-plate collectors are generally less expensive and simpler in design, while evacuated tube collectors are more efficient, especially in colder climates or during periods of low sunlight.

The absorbed solar energy heats a fluid, usually a mixture of water and antifreeze, that circulates through the collectors. This heated fluid then flows to a storage tank, where it transfers its thermal energy to water intended for use. The storage tank is insulated to minimize heat loss.

When hot water or heating is required, the stored heat from the tank is used. For domestic hot water, the heated water can be directly supplied to taps and showers. For space heating, the warm fluid from the tank can circulate through radiators or underfloor heating systems. Päikeseküttega systems often incorporate a backup heating source, such as a conventional boiler, to ensure a consistent supply of heat during periods of insufficient solar radiation. The integration of these systems aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower energy costs.
