Päättyjännitteeseen, often translated as "terminal voltage" in English, refers to the electric potential difference measured across the terminals of an electrical device when it is in operation. This voltage is not necessarily the same as the electromotive force (EMF) generated by a source, such as a battery or generator. The difference arises due to internal resistance within the device. When current flows through the device, there is a voltage drop across its internal resistance, which reduces the voltage available at the terminals.

For a battery, the terminal voltage is the EMF minus the voltage drop due to its internal resistance. This means that as a battery discharges and its internal resistance increases, or as the current drawn from it increases, the terminal voltage decreases. Similarly, for a motor, the terminal voltage is the applied voltage minus the voltage drop across its internal winding resistance and counter-electromotive force (CEMF) generated by its rotation.
