Päättelytilastotiede, often translated as inferential statistics, is a branch of statistics that involves using sample data to make inferences about a larger population. Instead of describing the characteristics of a dataset directly, inferential statistics aims to draw conclusions that extend beyond the immediate data. This process typically involves selecting a representative sample from a population, analyzing the sample's properties, and then using statistical models to estimate or predict characteristics of the entire population.

Key techniques in inferential statistics include hypothesis testing and estimation. Hypothesis testing is used to determine whether there is enough evidence in a sample of data to reject a null hypothesis, which is a statement about the population. Estimation, on the other hand, involves using sample data to estimate population parameters, such as the mean or proportion. This estimation can be done using point estimates, which provide a single value, or interval estimates, which provide a range of plausible values.

The validity of inferences made in inferential statistics relies heavily on the assumption that the sample is representative of the population. Random sampling methods are crucial for minimizing bias and ensuring that the sample accurately reflects the population's characteristics. Common methods for random sampling include simple random sampling, stratified sampling, and cluster sampling. The larger the sample size, generally the more reliable the inferences will be.

Inferential statistics is widely applied in various fields, including scientific research, social sciences, economics, and medicine, to make informed decisions and draw meaningful conclusions from observed data.
