Päällystyslaitteet, commonly known as paving machines or asphalt pavers, are specialized heavy vehicles used in road construction and maintenance to spread and compact asphalt, concrete, or other paving materials. These machines play a crucial role in creating smooth, durable, and even road surfaces.

The primary function of a päällystyslaitteet is to receive a mixture of asphalt or other paving materials from a dump truck and then precisely distribute it across the prepared roadbed. This distribution is achieved through a screed, a leveling mechanism located at the rear of the paver. The screed can be adjusted to control the thickness and width of the pavement layer. Vibrating screeds or screeds with tamping bars further help in compacting the material as it is laid.
