Oxidativní processes refer to chemical reactions involving the transfer of electrons from one substance to another, typically resulting in the oxidation of one reactant and the reduction of another. These reactions are fundamental in various scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental science. Oxidation itself involves the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation state, while reduction involves the gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation state. Together, these processes are known as redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions.

In biological systems, oxidative processes play a crucial role in metabolism, energy production, and detoxification. For example, cellular respiration in mitochondria relies on oxidative phosphorylation, where oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain, enabling the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells. Oxidative stress, however, occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body’s ability to neutralize them through antioxidants. In environmental chemistry, oxidative processes are essential for the breakdown of pollutants. For instance, photochemical oxidation in the atmosphere helps degrade volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through reactions with hydroxyl radicals and ozone. Industrial applications also utilize oxidation, such as in the production of chemicals like sulfuric acid or the treatment of wastewater through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), which use strong oxidants like hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet light to eliminate contaminants.

Oxidative processes can be catalyzed by enzymes, such as oxidases and peroxidases, which facilitate specific biochemical reactions. Synthetic catalysts, including metals and metal oxides, are also widely used in industrial settings to enhance reaction rates and selectivity. Understanding oxidative mechanisms is vital for developing sustainable technologies, improving human health, and mitigating environmental pollution.
