**Oxidanter**

An oxidanter is a chemical or biological agent capable of facilitating oxidation reactions. These substances typically donate electrons or accept electrons from other molecules, thereby increasing their oxidation state. Oxidants are commonly used in various industrial, laboratory, and environmental applications due to their ability to enhance chemical transformations, disinfection, and material processing.

In organic chemistry, oxidants are frequently employed to convert alcohols into carbonyl compounds (e.g., aldehydes or ketones), or to oxidize hydrocarbons into more oxidized derivatives. Examples include potassium permanganate (KMnO₄), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and ozone (O₃). These compounds are often strong oxidizing agents, capable of breaking down organic pollutants in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Biologically, oxidants play a role in cellular respiration, where molecules like nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) act as electron carriers. Some microorganisms naturally produce oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide, to combat pathogens or degrade organic matter.

Safety considerations are important when handling oxidants, as they can be highly reactive and pose risks of explosions, corrosion, or toxic byproducts. Proper storage, handling, and disposal protocols are essential to mitigate hazards associated with oxidizing agents.
