Ounasjoki

Ounasjoki is a river in the Lapland region of northern Finland. It forms part of the Kemijoki river basin, one of Finland’s large river systems, and flows through a sparsely populated and boreal landscape. The river and its surrounding catchment play a role in regional drainage, ecology, and water management.

The source of Ounasjoki is Lake Ounasjärvi in the northern part of Finnish Lapland. From there the river runs generally southeast, passing near the city of Rovaniemi and continuing through the fjell and forested countryside. In its lower reaches, Ounasjoki contributes to the Kemijoki River before the waters eventually reach the Gulf of Bothnia.

Ounasjoki is part of a broader hydroelectric and water-regulation network within the Kemijoki basin. The river and its basin are managed to balance power generation, flood control, and environmental considerations. This includes infrastructure and practices aimed at maintaining flow regimes and supporting aquatic habitats.

The river is used for recreation and is an accessible feature for residents and visitors. In suitable seasons, activities such as fishing, canoeing, and rafting take place along sections of the river. The area experiences seasonal changes, with the river typically freezing over in winter and thawing in spring.
