Otsesuhted

Otsesuhted is a term used to describe direct relationships between two entities, where interaction, influence, or information flows without intermediaries. In sociology and network theory, these are often referred to as direct ties or dyadic relations, emphasizing immediacy and reciprocity in the connection, as opposed to indirect or mediated connections that pass through one or more intermediaries.

Etymology and usage notes: the word is built from Estonian otsene meaning direct and suhe meaning relationship or relation, and is used in Estonian-language scholarship. In English-language texts, it is sometimes translated as direct relationships or direct ties.

Applications and contexts: in sociology, otsesuhted describe the fundamental one-to-one links between individuals or organizations. In data modeling, they appear as direct edges or straightforward foreign-key relationships that do not depend on bridging nodes. In studies of communication, otsesuhted focus on unmediated information transfer between two actors.

Examples: a doctor–patient relationship, a supervisor–subordinate relationship, a parent–child relationship, or a direct seller–buyer exchange are commonly cited instances of otsesuhted.
