Otozomal

Otozomal is a term used in genetics to describe a gene or a genetic disorder that is located on an autosome, which are any of the numbered chromosomes, 1 through 22, rather than the sex chromosomes (X and Y). Autosomes are present in both males and females. Therefore, otozomal inheritance patterns apply equally to both sexes.

When a gene is otozomal, its inheritance follows predictable patterns based on whether the trait it influences is dominant or recessive. Otozomal dominant conditions manifest if only one copy of the altered gene is present. Otozomal recessive conditions require two copies of the altered gene, one from each parent, for the trait or disorder to be expressed. Many common genetic disorders, such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia, are otozomal. Understanding otozomal inheritance is crucial for genetic counseling and predicting the likelihood of passing on certain traits or diseases.
