OstBerlin
OstBerlin, or East Berlin, refers to the eastern half of the city during the period of Berlin’s division in the Cold War. From 1949 to 1990 the city was divided into four sectors controlled by the Allied powers and the Soviet Union, with East Berlin serving as the capital of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The western sectors formed West Berlin, an enclave within East Germany connected to West Germany by air, road, and rail links.
OstBerlin housed the government and party leadership of the GDR. The city contained the core organs of
