Osmoosilla

Osmoosilla is a genus of small, freshwater snails, aquatic gastropod mollusks in the family Hydrobiidae. The genus was first described by the German malacologist Karl Ludwig Koch in 1840. Osmoosilla species are characterized by their small size, typically measuring less than 2 millimeters in length, and their distinctive shell shape, which is often elongated and slightly curved.

The genus Osmoosilla is found in various freshwater habitats, including ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. These snails are known for their ability to survive in low-oxygen environments, which is reflected in their scientific name, which translates to "low-oxygen dweller." They are also known for their rapid reproduction, with some species capable of producing up to 100 offspring in a single reproductive cycle.

Osmoosilla species play an important role in freshwater ecosystems, serving as a food source for various predators, including fish and other invertebrates. They also contribute to the breakdown of organic matter, helping to maintain the health of their aquatic habitats.

The genus Osmoosilla includes several species, with the most well-known being Osmoosilla glabra, which is found in Europe and Asia. Other species include Osmoosilla obtusa, Osmoosilla subobtusa, and Osmoosilla subrotunda, which are found in North America.
