Osmolaarisen

Osmolaarisen is a subclass of golid molecules that contain a high concentration of osmolites attached to a smaller diffusible core. The osmolites are typically sugars or other small organic molecules that have a low molecular weight and an affinity for water. The diffusible core can be composed of a variety of molecules, including proteins or small ligands.

The osmol potential of an osmolal molecule is typically endothermic, meaning it releases energy as it disintegrates into its constituent osmolites and core component. This process is favored by high concentrations of solutes in the surrounding environment. Consequently, osmolal molecules tend to accumulate in areas of a cell with high osmolarity, where they can counteract changes in water potential that may occur as a result of osmotic gradient shifting.

The function of osmolal molecules in the cell is not yet fully understood, but may include stabilizing the cell membrane against pore- inducing solutes. Some experiments indicate that osmolal molecules play an essential part in equilibration processes that take place in cell cytoplasm during conditions of heavy adaptive change.

Osmolaal derivatives are used for technical purposes.
