Orðasamsetning is an Icelandic linguistic term that refers to the process of forming new words by combining two or more existing words. This process is a fundamental way in which languages evolve and expand their vocabulary. In Icelandic, orðasamsetning is particularly productive, contributing significantly to the richness and specificity of the language.

The resulting compound word, known as a "orðasamstæða," typically takes on a meaning that is a combination of the meanings of its constituent parts, though sometimes the meaning can be idiomatic or metaphorical. For example, combining "hús" (house) and "bíl" (car) creates "húsbíll," which means "motorhome" or "campervan."
