Ortstheorie

Ortstheorie (literally "place theory") is a set of analytical approaches in geography, urban studies, and cultural studies that examines how places are produced, experienced, and changed through the intersection of material conditions, social practices, history, and meaning.

Places are seen as the outcomes of collective action rather than mere backdrops; the term contrasts with abstract "space" by emphasizing locality, identity, and memory.

Key concepts include sense of place (Ortsinn), place attachment, place-making, locality, locale, and emplacement, acknowledging that places are dynamic and contested.
