Ortenaukreis

Ortenaukreis is a rural district (Landkreis) in the southwest of Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It belongs to the Regierungsbezirk Freiburg and has Offenburg as its capital. The district sits in the Upper Rhine Plain at the western edge of the Black Forest and covers a landscape that includes river valleys, wine-growing areas, and forested hills. The Rhine forms part of the western boundary and the border with France lies to the west and southwest, with Kehl directly opposite Strasbourg.

Historically, Ortenaukreis was created in 1973 during Baden-Württemberg’s district reform by merging several former districts. Today
