Orfeos

Orfeos is the plural form of the given name Orfeo in Spanish and Portuguese. It may refer to multiple persons named Orfeo or to artistic, cultural, or geographic uses of the name that derive from the figure Orpheus.

Orpheus is a legendary figure in ancient Greek mythology, celebrated as a master musician and poet. According to myth, he played the lyre with such skill that it could charm animals, trees, and even the forces of the underworld. He is typically described as the son of the muse Calliope (and in some accounts of Apollo). After Eurydice dies, he travels to the realm of Hades to retrieve her. He succeeds in persuading Hades and Persephone to release her, on the condition that he must not look back at her until they reach the upper world. He fails this, and Eurydice is lost to him forever. In some versions he is killed by the followers of Dionysus, and his head and lyre are said to endure as a symbol of lyric art.

Within literature and the performing arts, Orpheus's story has been retold countless times in opera, drama, poetry, and visual art. The Spanish-language form Orfeos may appear in references to those adaptations, or as a surname. The name itself is used broadly in culture to signify music, artistic inspiration, and the arts, sometimes in plural form to indicate multiple individuals connected to Orpheus's legacy.
