Orenburg

Orenburg is a city in southwestern Russia and the administrative center of Orenburg Oblast. It is located on the left bank of the Ural River near its border with Kazakhstan, in the southern Ural region. The population is around 600,000.

Founded in 1743 as a fortress named Orenburg, the settlement was created to guard the eastern approaches to Russia and to protect trade routes to Siberia. The name derives from the Oren River on which the fortress stood. In the following centuries, it developed as a regional administrative, military, and commercial center, growing into an important center of metallurgy and, later, industry.

Economy: Orenburg has a diversified industrial base, including mechanical engineering, metalworking, chemical production, and food processing. The city serves as a logistics hub due to its location along major transport routes between Europe and Central Asia.

Education and culture: The city is home to several higher education institutions, including Orenburg State University. It has theatres, museums and cultural venues. The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. The surrounding steppe and the Urals shape its regional character.
