Ordningsord

Ordningsord (order words) are words and expressions that indicate sequence or position within a text or conversation. They help organize information by signaling whether items come first, next, or last. The category typically includes ordinal numerals (ordinals) and a subset of adverbs or phrases that mark order in discourse.

In Swedish, common ordningsord include ordinal numerals such as första, andra, tredje, which designate positions in a list or ranking; and time-order adverbs such as först, sedan, därefter, slutligen, till sist, which structure procedures or narratives. Formal sequences often use phrases like för det första, för det andra (first of all, second of all).

Function and usage: Ordningsord provide coherence by guiding readers through steps, arguments, or items. They can appear at the beginning of clauses or as part of a list. They may be inflected to agree with the noun they modify (första platsen) or function as adverbs (först, därefter).

Relationship to other numerals: Ordinal numerals (ordningstal) express position; cardinal numerals express quantity (en, två, tre). Some languages treat ordningsord as a separate class from general numerals, while others blend them with adjectives or adverbs in discourse.

Cross-linguistic note: Similar devices exist in many languages, e.g., English first, second, then; German zuerst, dann; French premier, deuxième.
