The lips are the outermost part of the oral region, serving as the primary interface between the body and the external environment. They are responsible for sealing the mouth during swallowing and chewing, as well as producing speech sounds. The lips are also sensitive to taste and touch.

The buccal mucosa, or cheek lining, is the inner surface of the lips and cheeks. It is lined with mucous membranes that secrete saliva, which aids in digestion and maintains oral hygiene. The buccal mucosa is also involved in the sensation of taste.
